Freedom To Own or Freedom to Know? ![]() (But I personally recommend a libre software browser like Mozilla Firefox) |
News July 2007: Well, another 3 Massey papers and 2 mid-year contact courses finished. So far I have yet to fail a paper and this semester I got my first A - in Programming Fundamentals! Yay! I have also been getting busy at Oblong infoshop. Linux Play is happening every Saturday afternoon from 3pm now and we have more than half of the Oblong PCs running Ubuntu Linux. Unfortunately Schenche is heading back to Germany, a huge loss of a good friend and a master technician. I continue to keep tabs on CreativeCommonz (see the new Projects list down the left column) and I've been doing some preliminary networking on the idea of a launch event to promote CC licensing to artists. The AlternativesIMC project is really starting to pick up steam again. We are hoping to have a usable site up by the end of the year. In the meantime the email list is also serving as a forum for brainstorming around activist networking systems and libre software for building them. It seems I'm not the only one that still believes in the net as a media for activism rather than just porn and spam. Speaking of media activism, check out EngageMedia, an excellent site where you can upload, watch and download videos. One way to watch the videos is to add Engage as a channel is the DemocracyPlayer (soon to be renamed Miro), a libre software media player which works kind of like a digital television. It's cross-platform so you can use it on Windows, Linux or MacOSX. Check it out! BTW: If you think nuclear power is a realistic solution to climate change check out my commentary on nuclear technology. Also if the idea that there are parallels between genetic engineering and proprietary software piques your curiousity, check 'Freedom to Own or Freedom to Know?'. have renamed this article on intellectual resource struggles, which I originally wrote for Red and Green magazine and posted here under the title 'Source of Conflict'. |
Projects CreativeCommoNZ is coming along well. A static info site will go live in the next few months and we are hoping to launch the licenses in time for the digital strategy summit in October.
Aotearoa Information Radio
The portal is now a bit out of date. Hopefully we can get some fresh energy into independent radio networking with the advent of the W((i))ndy show on VBC student radion in Pōneke/ Wellington. After spending two week long field work camps I completed version 1.0 of a case study on Happy Valley. I have made a .pdf (version 1.1) which doesn't have the pretty photos or maps but once I get feedback about the text I will work towards a flash version 2.0 with all the bells and whistles. Help Strypey * I
am looking for a second hand digital camera. Nothing
flash, just
something I can use to take pictures for websites.
* I have an old punk bass guitar I'm gradually knocking into a usable shape but I will need a bass amplifier (head and speaker or combo). * I also play drums and I'd love a practice drum kit to keep at home for jamming purposes. * It's hard to get good boots these days. I'll wear second hand leather out of desperation but I'm really keen to find a hard-wearing vegan alternative. * Digital video camera - just a simple, used one we can keep at Oblong and use for training video activists If you have any of these things to give away, lend or sell please contact me, especially if you are in the Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington area). |
