SocialForge

A spanner

A modest proposal for completely retooling social organisation in the 21st century
This ideas presented here came from a number of parallel discussions on how to encourage and enable people to provide for all their needs, from food and water on up, in a way that takes inspiration from the examples offered by pioneering projects like  FreeNet, Indymedia, Food Not Bombs, Habitat for Humanity, Wikipedia, free software movment, green dollars, rainbow family etc

Using the internet to help people in this way has been a goal of for me since the early 90s when I set up an email list called DIYWeb to start bouncing some practical ideas around. More recently I have had some brainstorming sessions with Bobo from Enzyme, an activist list and web hosting server, where we talked about various technical options for such a system.

I suggested the name SocialForge - a play-on-words based on SourceForge.net which provides free resources for people developing open source software - during a discussion with another group about updating and globalizing the Indymedia Alternatives feature hosted by the Philidelphia IMC. Magius, an Italian indymediatista, has picked up the ball, registered SocialForge.net and set up a functional site using a PHP based content management software called Tikiwiki.

This site is a work in progress and I encourage people to contribute to it and make suggestions for improving its usefulness.
