Independent Music Resources

"When the music of a society changes, the whole society changes" - Plato

This is a list of independent non-profit organisations and small businesses in Aotearoa that I would expect to be supportive of unsigned musical acts. I am assembling this resource list as a first step to achieving the mission I set in my Decommodifying Music proposal. I encourage all musical artists, bands, producers to license their work under the Creative Commons licenses and supply copies of the chosen license with the work when distributing it through any of these outlets. Note: this page may eventually become part of the entertainment management collective I am planning codenamed Blue Cod.

B-Net

The B-Net is a network of 6 non-profit student-orientated radio stations around the country named after Auckland's 95BFM (originally Bosom FM I've been told), the oldest of them. The level of commercialism varies from station to station and from year to year, depending on who is involved in running them at any given time. Generally it's best to approach the host of the specialty show on each station that you think your music would suit. Songs popular on each show may then be promoted to the regular playlist.

Aotearoa Information Radio

AIR includes a network of independent radio stations that airs the thought-provoking music, interviews and talks of politically challenging people who are denied access to existing mainstream radio. The different stations have different attitudes towards playing music. You'll need to email each one individually and your more likely to have songs played if they have kind of political content.

Association of Community Radio Broadcasters

ACAB is a network of government-funded professionally run stations that specialize in providing airtime for minority-interest programming.
